Permaculture

Permaculture is a way of seeing the world that seeks to create healthy, sustainable, and regenerating systems of interaction between humans and the earth. What is good for us is good for the earth, and what is good for the earth is good for us. Humans are experiencing a lot of dis-ease and the planet is experiencing a lot of dis-ease. Permaculture was developed by Bill Mollison and David Holmgren in the 1970’s to address these concerns.

“The main features of the Permaculture approach are summarized as follows:
• It is a synthesis of traditional knowledge and modern science applicable in both urban and rural situations.
• It works with nature and takes natural systems as models to design sustainable environments that provide for basic human needs and the social and economic infrastructures that support them.
• It encourages us and gives us the capacity and opportunity to become a conscious part of the solutions to the many problems that face us locally and globally.”
(From Earth Users Guide to Permaculture by Rosemary Morrow p. 5)

Permaculture is ecological design that addresses many of the objectives we seek to incorporate into our home or work environment. Permaculture design plans can reduce the carbon footprint, improve the air quality, and foster a deep connection to the natural world. Today we are seeking ways to experience green living and sustainable living in a meaningful way. Permaculture addresses the indoor living environment as well as the outdoors. It incorporates organic gardening and elements of green home design to enhance natural living, ultimately empowering us to heal the planet and ourselves.
